Blogs, Podcasts, Facebook and Web-Based TV -- All Are Part of Camp ASCCA's PR Strategy
Allison Wetherbee from Camp ASCCA, the flagship facility for the Alabama Easter Seal Society, spoke at the January 16th membership meeting and shared both her inspiring story and practical advice about using social media.
Camp ASCCA is a barrier-free therapeutic recreational facility for children and adults on 230 acres in Jackson's Gap, Alabama. Under her guidance, the camp is just beginning to explore social media as a vehicle for reaching connecting people.
For example, they use videos and podcasts on the Camp ASCCA website, and maintain a Facebook group for alumni and former staffers. Allison also writes a personal blog about her experiences titled "I Was Born This Way."
Allison spent a good deal of time discussing sites that can help PR professionals get started with social media techniques. And she did an admirable job of convincing the audience of how easily they can be used by lay PR folks.
For example, Utterz lets you record messages directly to your website. It's like the updates (or "tweets") of Twitter-fame, but gives you options for sound, photos and video, just as quickly. The very first time Camp ASCCA tried an audio posting using Utterz, the process only took two minutes. And was listened to 45 times in the first hour of posting. Not bad.
And Blog Talk Radio gives anyone the ability to host a free, live, call-in talk show using just a computer and a phone line. Allison described the possibility of live discussions about camp activities and disabilities as just one of many valuable ways for the Camp to connect people using the web.
A great presentation!
