North Alabama PRCA Scholarships for Public Relations and Communications Students Now Open

We're now accepting applications for the Chapter's Michael K. Simmons Memorial Scholarship. The award is $2,000 toward the recipient’s tuition and fees for the Fall 2009 or Spring 2010 terms.

The scholarship is open to undergraduate students majoring in public relations or public relations-related fields of study such as marketing, mass communications, journalism, or English. Students must have completed at least one semester of coursework and can be full or part time.

Any student attending a college or university in North Alabama as an undergrad may apply. You can also apply if you're attending a college or University in the state of Alabama, so long as North Alabama is home.

More eligibility:

  • Student must have completed at least one semester of coursework
  • Must be enrolled in a communications-related field of study
  • Must submit an essay along with application answering the following: “What are your Communications/PR career goals and reasons for choosing the Communications/PR profession.”
  • Must have a 3.0 (on a 4.0 grade scale) or a 2.0 (on a 3.0 grade scale) grade point average
    Please include a copy of your transcript (official or unofficial)
  • Must submit an academic letter of recommendation
  • Student enrollment status – either full time or part time

Applications must be postmarked for April 3, 2009.

A Legacy of Awards

Part of the North Alabama legacy is a history of award-winning professional activity.

Our chapter has won the Sharon Heflin "Chapter of the Year" Award six times.

Ten North Alabama members have received the state-wide organization's highest honor, the Philip R. Forrest Practitioner of the Year Award. ( Find the North Alabama Practitioners of the Year winners.)

Nineteen North Alabama members have been named Senior Practitioners (Find the full list of all PRCA Senior Practitioners.)

Nearly every year, our members bring home Medallion Awards bestowed by their peers in the state.  (Find the full list of 2007 PRCA Medallion winners.)

Two Named Senior Practitioners in 2007

Bill Yell and Janet Felts were named 2007 Senior Practitioners.

Janet Felts is a Marketing Officer for Redstone Federal Credit Union and was most recently the Communications Manager for Sirsi-Dynix Corporation. Felts has more than 18 years of experience in public relations, marketing, journalism, sales and fundraising. She has served as Webmaster and treasurer for the North Alabama Chapter of Public Relations Council of Alabama (NAPRCA). Felts is responsible for Publicity for NAPRCA for the 2007-2008 year.

Bill Yell of Huntsville Utilities is the Communications Director for Huntsville Utilities. He has been with Huntsville Utilities for more than 29 years and has been the Communications

Director since 1993. Yell also serves as chair of the Public Communications Committee for the American Public Power Association (APPA). APPA is a trade organization for the 2,000+ public power utilities in the United States .

Eligibility for Senior Practitioners includes meeting three of the following criteria:  15 years of full-time public relations experience (media can be included); accreditation by the NAPRC member organization; past officer or board member at chapter, state, or SPRF level; and/or recognition of professionalism as evidenced by such awards as Practitioner of the Year, Lantern Award, or similar honor.  (Medallion Awards can be included as can recognition from groups outside the professional organizations).  


Hester is PRCA Practitioner of the Year for 2007 

Vickye Hester, APR, was named 2007 Practitioner of the Year for the Public Relations Council of Alabama’s North Alabama Chapter. Hester is the public relations director at J. F. Drake State Technical College in Huntsville. Active in civic and community projects, she is accredited in public relations and has held a number of officer positions in the local PRCA chapter, including president. She is also past president of the Alabama College System Public Relations Association (ACSPRC) and has won several awards in ACSPRC’s annual statewide competition.

Hester graduated from Alabama A&M University and will receive her master’s degree in Journalism (Public Relations) from the University of Memphis . She is a member of the Committee of 100 and a graduate of Leadership Huntsville/Madison County.
